Why Is Machine Dried Imported Hay More Nutritious And Palatable Than Local Hay?

Hay produced in South Africa are traditionally sun-dried whilst leading hay manufacturers such as Newhay and Bunny Nature are using the latest developments in technology to produce high quality feeding hay.   Newhay timothy hay has earned the well-deserved reputation as the gold standard for feeding rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. After all, it’s high in fiber with the perfect ratio of nutrients for maintenance. Newhay timothy hay boasts a protein content of 12% compared to regular timothy hay (7% protein) from other producers. Timothy is also not the only grass hay on the block. Bunny Nature meadow hay from nature conservation areas in Germany are also becoming very popular to feed small pets in South Africa because it contains a wide diversity of plants. Even the best drying method cannot significantly improve hay quality if the basis is not right.   A good meadow with grasses, clover and meadow herbs is, in addition to the optimal cutting time, t.. What Is Best Feeding Hay For Rabbits In South Africa?

Rabbit owners are delightful people. You know that they are rarely loud and obnoxious (their rabbits would never stand for it); they have plenty of patience (because getting to know a rabbit takes time); and you can be certain that they are full of love and laughter (because that is exactly what rabbits inspire).   So, if you have gotten yourself a pet rabbit, welcome to the club. Your new baby bunny is sure to hop his way into your heart (or thump, depending on how stubborn you are about it). Rabbits are truly easy to love, as long as you give them just a few basics. Bunnies of all ages can be skittish, so avoid loud noises when you can. They also love to keep their feet on the ground, so be prepared to build ramps up to the couch. And, above all, rabbits have a specific diet, which undoubtedly should not be altered as it will affect the health and happiness of your pet. Rabbits (and other small furries, including chinchillas and guinea pigs) require an incredible need f.. [More] rabbitsinhome2.jpeg

What Are The Best Pellets To Feed Rabbits?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Rabbit Food | Bunny Nature
Rabbit pellets are a complementary addition to your rabbits’ diet and can be a source of nutrition when fed correctly. Originally, pellets were developed as a cheap way to feed livestock and these earlier foods tended to be high in fat content and lacked the high quality nutrition needed to support long term health and wellbeing.   However, good-quality, high-fibre rabbit pellets are now more widely available. They often contain a base of grass with additional herbs and are supplemented with vitamins and minerals. Functional ingredients such as prebiotics may also be added to help support a healthy digestion. Do Rabbits Need Pellets? Given properly, and in the correct amounts, high-quality rabbit pellets offer a variety of vitamins and minerals that can support good health. They should be provided as part of a balanced diet. Rabbits need a high fibre diet made up of 85-90% high quality feeding hay or fresh grass, 10% rabbit safe fresh greens, 5% rabbit nuggets, .. [More] rabbitseatfood.jpg

Why Rabbit Muesli Diets Are Harmful To Rabbits?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Bunny Nature
Muesli diets lead to health problems in rabbits and should be avoided. For many years muesli mixes have been popular as rabbit food but the health risks associated with feeding them have been recognised.   In 1996 a paper was published that highlighted the problems of selective feeding from these mixtures. More recent research in 2013 confirmed that selective feeding is a problem and that obesity and inactivity can be induced by feeding muesli mixes as well as dental disease.   What are muesli mixes? Muesli mixes are a mixture of cereals, legumes, pellets, extrusions and, in some cases, other ingredients such as locust beans or alfalfa. The mixtures are cheap to produce, easy to store and heavily marketed by the food manufacturers. Cereals are the staple ingredients of these mixes and they are high in starch and low in fibre, so they are fattening, which is acceptable for short-lived rabbits that are reared for meat, but unacceptable for pet rabbits that can li.. How Long Do Rabbits Live?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
Everyone wants their pet to live a long and healthy life. For many years in South Africa it was thought that rabbits live maybe three to five years. Overall, rabbits are living longer these days thanks to a combination of specially trained veterinarians and better knowledge of how rabbits should live and what they should eat.   Domestic rabbits usually live between 10-15 years, in contrast to wild rabbits, which may only live a few years because they deal with disease, starvation, and predators. Though there are a variety of rabbit breeds, it’s difficult to determine whether specific breeds live longer than others. Larger breeds often have a shorter lifespan than smaller rabbits, but there are many rabbits which can prove you wrong. The oldest domesticated rabbit on record is 18 years. Today people are feeding rabbits much better food than in the past and keeping them inside more often, which protects them from weather and predators and can help them to live longer. .. Muesli Can Kill Pet Rabbits, Guinea Pigs & Chinchillas
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Pet Care | Degus | Bunny Nature | Newhay
There is a major problem in South Africa where so many pet stores, breeders and pet owners don’t realize that feeding muesli foods can kill pet rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas, according to latest scientific research.   Their attitude is that they have been feeding these foods for many years and their pets seem to be okay. They seem to turn a blind eye to any new scientific studies or recent changes in feeding guidelines announced by animal welfare organizations or FEDIAF.   The two year scientific study on the 200 rabbits by Professor Anne Meredith from University of Edinburgh made headline news all over the world in June 2013. The results from this study proved to the pet industry that feeding any type of muesli food (dry mixes) including pellets can have fatal consequences. This research is supported by every animal welfare organization thoughout the world including the RSPCA, PDSA, Blue Cross, Wood Green, RWAF and FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Fede.. Choosing A Pellet Food
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Degus | Bunny Nature
Pellets are a smaller but important part of your guinea pig, chinchilla or rabbit's diet. They are designed to be concentrated sources of fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals to help ensure that your pet is getting all the nutrients he or she needs.   When feeding pellets, it is important to remember that a rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla's natural diet contains a high volume of low nutrient food. They are grazers by nature and in the wild they spend much of their days munching on grass and grazing for food.   While pellets enable owners to protect their pet's health and give them the range of nutrients they need, they are ultimately a low volume of high nutrient food that runs contrary to the diet in the wild. Therefore, it is important to follow feeding guidelines closely to make sure that they receive as balanced a diet as possible.  Mixes vs Pellets Mixes, also known as "muesli," are dry food mixes that are primarily cereal-base.. Rapid Decline of Muesli Dry Foods
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Pet Care
For the last four years the PDSA in UK has published the PDSA Annual Well-being Report (PAW Report for short). It covers cats, dogs and rabbits and looks at welfare issues by asking pet owners and vets questions about care and welfare. It’s great to have these stats on things like how many rabbits are neutered and whether they get an appropriate diet because it helps welfare campaigners monitor how successful they are at implementing changes and also where to target change. So, on to this years report. Here is a handy graphically summary (feel free to share): One of the biggest changes is the rapid decline in muesli based dry foods. In the last four years it’s dropped from being eaten by 49% to 25% of rabbits in UK. Interestingly it’s been a sustained change, continuing this year, not just a short term reaction to media coverage. On the other hand in the last year there hasn’t been much progress on hay eating; the percentage not .. [More] bunnyeatingmuesli.jpg
